    Plaquenil for pmr

Are we so hypocritical that we can criticize a colleague on Monday for having subjected a patient to the ravages of chronic CS use, and then reverse course on Tuesday by prescribing identical treatment for another patient in order to expedite care on a hectic day? Patients need reliable information on CS use to become their own advocates.

Aug 14, 2017 Plaquenil is the brand name of hydroxychloroquine, a drug used to prevent or treat malaria 2. Plaquenil is also used for long-term treatment of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis RA and systemic lupus erythmatosis. Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine belongs to a group of medicines called quinolines. Plaquenil is used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites that enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Malaria is common in areas such as Africa, South America, and Southern Asia. Jan 22, 2020 Typically, polymyalgia rheumatica affects people older than 55. Left untreated, it can lead to stiffness and significant disability. In some cases, symptoms do not get worse. They may even lessen in a few years. In a minority of cases, polymyalgia rheumatica is associated with giant cell arteritis temporal arteritis.

Hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) is considered a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug (DMARD). Indeed, routine CS use in acute PMR is a conversation that is in need of reassessment.

Sep 08, 2016 When I started my rheumatology practice 40 years ago, it quickly became apparent that many referrals of presumed polymyalgia rheumatica PMR patients and presumed giant cell arteritis GCA patients were the recipients of devastating side effects from long-term corticosteroid CS use that could not be discontinued due to prompt recurrence of inflammatory phenomena. It was. Read More

When my wife was first diagnosed with PMR in May, 2016, she was put on 15mg Pred. A month later, she was told to take 400mg of plaquenil daily, with the understanding that plaquenil would replace prednisone eventually. This rheumy tried to get her down to 5mg six months later, which was a total mistake. Pathway-specific inhibition of primaquine metabolism by chloroquine. The major metabolites were carboxyprimaquine predominantly from −-PQ, carbamoyl primaquine glucuronide exclusively from +-PQ and glycosylated primaquine formed from both enantiomers. The inhibitory effect of chloroquine and quinine on the formation of carboxyprimaquine and carbamoyl primaquine glucuronide was mild
