How does plaquenil help patients with sjogren& 39

Please review the following URL and make sure that it is spelled correctly. Plaquenil is the brand name for the prescription drug hydroxychloroquine.

Plaquenil reduces inflammation in many Rheumatic disorders, the mode of action is pretty complicated though so I shan't bore you with all the details, but basically it prevents your dendritic cells these are messengers for your immune system, if you will from interacting with your T-Cells a special type of white blood cell which through a convoluted and boring process, causes inflammation. What Is Plaquenil? Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine is an antimalarial medication used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites, which enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Plaquenil is also used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. Plaquenil is available in generic form. Plaquenil does not work for everyonebut thankfully it does for me. Without Plaquenil, I am sleeping most of the day and unable to accomplish much. Plaquenil also takes time to build up in your body to determine whether it works for one person and not another. For me, it was about 6-months. I believe Drs generally state 3-6 months for patients.

Malaria is spread by mosquitoes, which transmit the parasites that cause the infection, usually in tropical and subtropical parts of the world. It's used to treat and prevent malaria infection, and to reduce symptoms and progression of autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and others.

For many patients with Sjogren's, Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine has long been the go to drug that their doctors prescribe. It is often the first line of attack before other more aggressive therapies are added such as methotrexate or rituximab that have bigger impacts on the immune system. The short answer is that nobody really knows how or why Plaquenil helps autoimmune diseases- they just know it does. It was discovered by accident - it's an anti-malarial drug, and doctors noticed that while being treated for malaria, patients with Rheumatoid autoimmune conditions had spontaneous improvement of symptoms. Taking the medication with food eases nausea for most people taking the drug. Less common side effects include skin rashes, hair thinning, and weakness. A rare side effect of Plaquenil involves visual changes or possible loss of vision—the side effect that is most worrisome for patients.

Had to stop taking Plaquenil - I recently decided to stop taking Plaquenil because I was having constant chest pains even more so than I usually have due to Lupus. Since I have not taken it my chest feels so much better which is odd because chest pain is not listed as a side effect.
