    Hydroxychloroquine and antacids

It says on the bottle I can’t take an antacid for at least four hours after taking the Plaquenil. I hate heart burn:( I take a PPI (proton pump inhibitor) essentially antacid in the morning that is supposed to last all day. I would ask your pharmacist first and see if it matters whether it is just a 'tums' or medication strength. I think if it keeps happening I’ll go talk to my pharmacist to see what they recommend. Has anyone else experienced heartburn while taking Plaquenil and if so what did you do to avoid or ease the heartburn? If they are not able to give you an answer your Family Dr or Rheumatoid will know. Fortunately the heartburn goes away after a few hours, but those few hours are very uncomfortable!

Hi As far as I know the advice is to make sure that antacids and Plaquenil are taken at least 4 hours apart. If they are taken together - effectiveness decreases but 4 hours apart is OK. Feb 19, 2020 Hydroxychloroquine sulfate is a colorless crystalline solid, soluble in water to at least 20 percent; chemically the drug is 2-4-7-Chloro-4-quinolylaminopentylethylamino ethanol sulfate 11. PLAQUENIL hydroxychloroquine sulfate tablets contain 200 mg hydroxychloroquine sulfate, equivalent to 155 mg base, and are for oral administration. Hydroxychloroquine Major Hydroxychloroquine absorption may be reduced by antacids as has been observed with the structurally similar chloroquine. Administer hydroxychloroquine and antacids at least 4 hours apart. Of note, a study demonstrated no significant difference in hydroxychloroquine serum concentration in patients taking concomitant.

But that's just the optimum way to take it, not the necessity. Sometimes what is suggested (no antacid for 4 hours) is not necessarily required if it means you can't or don't want to take your plaquenil anymore. the antacid will affect the absorption of the plaquenil and the amount your body can absorb.

Hydroxychloroquine also known by its popular brand name Plaquenil is an oral medication that is commonly used to treat a variety of autoimmune diseases including systemic lupus, dermatomyositis, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren’s and many other conditions as well. In the field of hair loss, conditions such as lichen planopilaris, frontal fibrosing alopecia and discoid lupus are frequently treated with hydroxychloroquine. Hydroxychloroquine is commonly used alongside other disease-modifying drugs including methotrexate – especially for rheumatoid arthritis. However, some drugs can interact with hydroxychloroquine. Indigestion remedies for example, antacids including some over-the-counter preparations can stop hydroxychloroquine being absorbed. Hi Enjoy, You are right that only antacids react with plaquenil, not acid reducers, at least for the main ones that I checked on On which is one of our approved sites for linking in the forum, you can look up all your medications and the drug interaction listings are especially nice.
