    Chloroquine and doxycycline

Chloroquine has been extensively used in mass drug administrations, which may have contributed to the emergence and spread of resistance. It is recommended to check if chloroquine is still effective in the region prior to using it.

Doxycycline offers substantial but not complete suppression of the asexual blood stages of Plasmodium strains. Prescribing doxycycline in the absence of a proven or strongly suspected bacterial infection or a prophylactic indication is unlikely to provide benefit to the patient and increases the risk of the development of drug-resistant bacteria Chloroquine is the generic form of the brand-name prescription medicine Aralen, which is used to prevent and treat malaria — a mosquito-borne disease caused by a parasite — and to treat amebiasis, an infection of the intestines caused by a parasite. Doxycycline also can prevent some additional infections e.g. Rickettsiae and leptospirosis and so it may be preferred by people planning to do lots of hiking, camping, and wading and swimming in fresh water. Cannot be used by pregnant women and children 8 years old. Some people would rather not take a medicine every day.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend against treatment of malaria with chloroquine alone due to more effective combinations. In areas where resistance is present, other antimalarials, such as mefloquine or atovaquone, may be used instead.

The results revealed that the two most effective drugs for treating P. gallinaceum at the asexual erythrocyte stage were chloroquine and doxycycline. Tissue schizonts of P. gallinaceum in all the medicated groups were significantly fewer than the unmedicated, infected control P 0.05. Chloroquine is a 4-aminoquinoline which has marked, rapid schizontocidal activity against blood forms of P. ovale and P. malariae and against susceptible strains of P. vivax and P. falciparum. It is also gametocytocidal against P. vivax, P. ovale and P. malariae and immature P. falciparum. Doxycycline and chloroquine were measured using high‐performance liquid chromatography Nieder & Jaeger 1988; Keundjian & Di Landro 1993. In the C/P group, volunteers with more than 15 μg/ml of chloroquine were defined as observant. In the doxycycline group, volunteers with more than 0.5 μg/ml were defined as observant.
